NO ESCAPE
A Scots Guardsman in North Africa was driving a lorry-load of about 40 Italian prisoners back to camp when the vehicle came under artillery fire. The lorry became bogged down in the sand after he drove off the road to avoid the shelling. The Guardsman promptly jumped out and climbed into passing lorry, which then sped off. The abandoned prisoners pushed the truck back onto the road. But instead of driving back towards the Italian lines, they chased after the retreating British. Quizzed later about the decision, one of the Italians explained to his British captors “We are your prisoners and your prisoners we are going to stay".
